You are circling Oxford Street on a Saturday, the Westfield entry queue is backed up onto Grafton Street, and you are trying to work out whether two hours of free parking is enough to do what you came for. Bondi Junction is one of the densest parking markets in Sydney — a major shopping centre, three council car parks, metered kerb on almost every commercial street, a rail terminus, and a constant flow of people using it as an overflow car park for Bondi Beach. This guide covers what each option actually costs, where the free hours really are, and where Waverley Council’s parking officers make their money. Everything below is current as at 24 August 2026.
One thing up front: this is general information, not legal advice, and parking rates change without notice — confirm the current numbers on the Westfield Bondi Junction parking page and Waverley Council’s car parks page before you go. For anything serious about a fine, LawAccess NSW (1300 888 529) can point you in the right direction.
Westfield Bondi Junction: the free hours
This is the option most people default to, and for short visits it’s genuinely hard to beat. Per the official Westfield Bondi Junction parking page:
- Everyone gets 2 hours free. There’s no boom gate on entry — number-plate cameras read you in. Under 2 hours, drive straight out.
- Westfield members get 4 hours free Monday to Friday and 3 hours free on weekends, provided the number plate is saved in the Westfield app. Membership is free.
- Members also park free with entry after 6pm, as long as they exit before 1am.
- A limited-time offer gives all customers free weekend parking with entry after 4pm. Westfield doesn’t publish an end date, so treat it as could-vanish-any-week.
- Mobility Parking Scheme permit holders get 4 hours free, seven days, on presentation of a valid permit at the Concierge desk.
The catch that trips people up is the re-entry rule. Westfield’s conditions of entry state you only get a second 2-hour free period on the same day if you re-enter more than 45 minutes after your previous exit. Ducking out to move the car and coming straight back doesn’t reset the clock.
The Westfield rate card
Once the free window closes, the meter jumps hard. These are the published rates as at 24 August 2026:
| Time parked | Standard | Member (Mon–Fri) | Member (Sat–Sun) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 2 hrs | Free | Free | Free |
| 2–2.5 hrs | $10.00 | Free | Free |
| 2.5–3 hrs | $15.00 | Free | Free |
| 3–3.5 hrs | $20.00 | Free | $15.00 |
| 3.5–4 hrs | $25.00 | Free | $20.00 |
| 4–4.5 hrs | $30.00 | $15.00 | $25.00 |
| 4.5–5 hrs | $40.00 | $20.00 | $35.00 |
| 5–5.5 hrs | $45.00 | $25.00 | $40.00 |
| 5.5–6 hrs | $50.00 | $35.00 | $45.00 |
| 6–6.5 hrs | $55.00 | $40.00 | $55.00 |
| 6.5–7 hrs | $60.00 | $45.00 | $60.00 |
| 7–7.5 hrs | $60.00 | $55.00 | $60.00 |
| 7.5 hrs + | $60.00 | $60.00 | $60.00 |
Maximum daily rate: $60. Overnight fee: $60. Note the shape of it — going from 2 hours to 3 hours costs a non-member $15, and from 2 hours to 5 hours costs $40. Westfield is cheap if you’re quick and punishing if you’re not.
Entrances, height limit, and the redevelopment
- Height limit: 2 metres. Vehicles over that can’t enter. That rules out most vans, roof boxes and lifted 4WDs.
- Two street entrances. The Grafton Street / Edgecliff Road side feeds P1–P6 (David Jones, Woolworths, Zara, Uniqlo, and valet on P4 Violet). The Hollywood Avenue side feeds the P-Maroon/Red/Orange/Yellow levels and the R rooftops (Coles, Harris Farm, JB Hi-Fi, Myer, Kmart, rebel, Harvey Norman).
- The centre is mid-redevelopment. Westfield’s own construction update says access to the R2 rooftop car park is limited during this stage, while R1, R3 and R4 stay open via Hollywood Avenue.
- Event Cinemas is temporarily closed for refurbishment and is due to reopen by the end of 2026. The usual “keep your movie ticket for an extra hour free” validation is therefore not much use right now.
- Valet runs from P4 Violet (Grafton Street entry) at $15 Monday to Friday and $20 Saturday, Sunday and public holidays — standard parking fees still apply after 2 hours.
Centre trading hours are 9:30am–6pm most days, 9:30am–9pm Thursday, 9:30am–7pm Friday and 10am–6pm Sunday.
The council car parks (usually cheaper for longer stays)
Here’s the part most guides miss: Waverley Council owns and operates three car parks, and all three are in Bondi Junction. They’re pitched at longer stays and they’re often much cheaper than Westfield past the three-hour mark. All three use licence-plate recognition. Rates below are from Waverley Council’s Pricing Policy and Schedule of Fees and Charges 2026–2027, in effect from 1 July 2026.

| Monthly (unreserved) | $365.00 | $365.00 | $365.00 |
* Library users get the first two hours free through a validation process — see below.
A few things worth knowing:
- Eastgate’s first hour is free, and if you exit for at least 30 minutes you get another free hour on same-day re-entry. Eastgate’s own centre page lists car park hours as 5am–11:30pm daily and notes the rooftop (Level 6) has a 1.9 m height restriction. The rate card printed on Eastgate’s website is out of date — the council schedule above is the current one.
- Waverley Library gives two hours free to library users through a validation process. Council’s library page describes it plainly: “Free two-hour parking is available underneath the library, entrance via Ebley.” If you’re not actually using the library, you’re on the paid rates.
- Hollywood Avenue has no free hour at all, but it has the best long-stay pricing: $19.80 early bird (in before 9am, out after 3:30pm, Monday to Friday), $22.40 all day on weekends with no time restriction, and a $195 per month residents’ scheme for Waverley LGA residents.
- Add-ons apply. There’s a $6.20 admin fee per transaction and a 0.8% credit-card surcharge, which the council has flagged will be removed from 1 October 2026 in line with the RBA’s surcharging decision.
Street parking: what Waverley’s meters cost
Waverley Council runs pay-by-plate meters right through the Bondi Junction commercial core. No ticket is printed and nothing goes on your dashboard — the plate is the ticket. You can pay at the meter or through the Park’nPay app.
| Meter zone | Hourly rate (2026–27) |
|---|---|
| Bondi Junction inner-core commercial | $8.70 |
| Bondi Junction outer-core commercial | $8.70 |
| Metered residential streets | $9.70 |
| Bondi Beach — Queen Elizabeth Drive / Park Drive North | $12.40 |
Two council rules do most of the work here:
- Bondi Junction commercial meters switch off at 6pm. Waverley states this explicitly. But — and this is the trap — “time restrictions still apply in metered areas.” A free 6pm meter in a 2P bay is still a 2P bay.
- There are 25 free 15-minute “drop-in” bays across Bondi Junction, Charing Cross and Bondi Beach. Look for the 15P signs; no meter payment is required in them.
Where free street parking actually is, and the catch
Be realistic about this one. Within a short walk of the mall, there is no meaningful pool of unrestricted free kerb. What exists is:
- After 6pm on the commercial streets, once meters switch off — subject to whatever time limit is signposted.
- The 15P drop-in bays, which are free but are 15 minutes.
- Resident Parking Scheme streets, signposted “Permit Holders Excepted.” These are free of charge to visitors, but only for the posted time limit (typically 2P or 4P), and they’re residential streets where turnover is already tight. Waverley runs RPS zones across the suburb and publishes a map per area — areas 21, 22, 25 and 26 cover Bondi Junction, Queens Park and Charing Cross. Open the resident parking permits page and check the map for the street you’re aiming at before you commit.
One detail printed on every one of those RPS maps is worth repeating, because it catches residents as well as visitors: “Resident parking permits do not provide exemptions to meter registration parking unless indicated on the sign.” A permit is not a universal pass in Bondi Junction.
The honest verdict: if your visit is under two hours, Westfield’s free period beats twenty minutes of circling for a 2P spot you’ll then have to watch. If your visit is longer than three hours, a council car park beats both. Free street parking at Bondi Junction is a thing that exists, not a thing you should plan around. If you’re not fluent in layered signs, our guide on how to read NSW parking signs unpacks “Permit Holders Excepted” and the rest.
All-day and commuter parking around the interchange
Bondi Junction is the terminus of the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra line and a major bus interchange, so the demand for all-day parking is enormous. The supply is not.
There is no Transport for NSW Park&Ride commuter car park at Bondi Junction. The Park&Ride network — where an accepted Opal card journey earns you up to 18 hours free parking — sits on the outer rail lines. Bondi Junction is not on the published list of Park&Ride locations.
So a commuter’s realistic options are:
| Option | Cost | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Eastgate rooftop, all day | $19.80 | Rooftop level only, 1.9 m height limit |
| Hollywood Ave / Library early bird | $19.80 | In before 9am, out after 3:30pm |
| Hollywood Ave weekend rate | $22.40 | Saturdays and Sundays, no time restriction |
| Council monthly permit | $365.00/month | Unreserved, any of the three council car parks |
| Hollywood Ave residents’ scheme | $195.00/month | Waverley LGA residents only |
| Westfield all day | $60.00 | Maximum daily rate |
Roughly $20 a day is the going rate for a full day at the Junction. Anyone paying Westfield’s $60 daily maximum has almost certainly made a mistake.
Enforcement: Waverley is one of the busiest ticketing councils in NSW
This is not a suburb where a stretched time limit goes unnoticed. According to Revenue NSW’s parking offences dataset (refreshed 18 August 2026), Waverley Council issued 60,419 parking penalty notices worth $10,110,855 in the 2025–26 financial year — about 165 notices a day, every day. That made it the fourth-highest issuing council in NSW, behind only the City of Sydney, Inner West and Parramatta. The year before, at 73,375 notices, it ranked third.
What those tickets cost, from the current NSW penalty notice schedule (as at 1 July 2025, re-checked 24 August 2026):
| Offence | Fine | Demerit points |
|---|---|---|
| Park continuously longer than permitted (overstay) | $140 | 0 |
| Fail to pay parking fee / disobey sign | $140 | 0 |
| Disobey No Parking sign | $140 | 0 |
| Stop/park in restricted parking area (permit zone) | $140 | 0 |
| Stop in loading zone | $235 | 0 |
| Disobey No Stopping sign | $330 | 0 |
| Stop in bus zone | $330 | 0 |
| Stop in disabled parking area without permit | $704 | 1 |
One $140 overstay costs seven times a full day in the Eastgate rooftop. Since 1 July 2025, NSW parking officers must attach a physical notification to the vehicle in most cases, and if they don’t, the fine must be issued within 7 calendar days. Waverley Council can’t adjudicate its own fines — every appeal goes to Revenue NSW. See NSW parking fine amounts in 2026 for the full schedule.
The weekend beach-overflow problem
On summer weekends, a large share of Bondi Junction’s parking demand isn’t shopping at all — it’s people who’ve given up on finding a spot at the beach and are parking at the Junction instead. The maths supports them. Beach-front meters on Queen Elizabeth Drive and Park Drive North run at $12.40 an hour, versus $8.70 on the Junction’s commercial meters or two free hours at Westfield.
From the interchange, Waverley Council’s own visitor site Hello Bondi says the 333, 380, 381 or 382 buses reach Bondi Beach in about 15 minutes, and that the walk down Bondi Road takes about 25 minutes. Downhill on the way there, uphill on the way back — factor that in with kids and beach gear.
The practical consequence: on a hot Saturday, the Junction’s free windows fill earlier than you’d expect for a shopping precinct, because half the cars in them are going to the beach. If you’re heading for the sand specifically, read where to park near Bondi Beach first — and if Bondi is a lost cause, Coogee is usually the easier southern alternative.
What this guide doesn’t cover
- Private off-street parking listed through apps like Spacer or Parkhound. Bondi Junction has a lot of apartment garages for rent, and for a regular commuter they can undercut $365 a month.
- Event-day changes. Temporary restrictions and tow-away zones get added around major events and roadworks. Check for orange temporary signs above the permanent ones.
- Resident permit eligibility. If you live in an RPS zone, the permit fees, off-street-space rules and household caps are all set out on Waverley’s parking permit types and fees page.
- Anything inside Westfield’s boom gates. That’s private land under Scentre Group’s conditions of entry, not council enforcement.
The short version
- Under 2 hours: Westfield, free. Join the Westfield app first and it’s 4 hours free on a weekday.
- 2 to 4 hours: Eastgate (first hour free, $25 to four hours) or the library car park if you’re using the library.
- All day: Eastgate rooftop or a Hollywood Avenue early bird, around $19.80.
- Evening: Meters off at 6pm in the commercial core, members free at Westfield after 6pm, Eastgate late bird $12.80.
- Going to the beach: Park at the Junction and take the 333 or walk down Bondi Road. Don’t pay $12.40 an hour at the beach if you don’t have to.
- Whatever you do, read the pole. A free meter after 6pm is still a signposted time limit.
Where Chalked comes in
The moment you leave a car park and take a spot on Ebley Street, Grafton Street, Birrell Street or any of the residential streets behind the mall, you’re in Waverley Council’s enforcement territory — and Waverley writes more than 60,000 tickets a year. Time limits at the Junction are short, turnover is watched, and $140 is the standard price of getting the timing wrong.
That’s the gap Chalked fills. It warns you when other drivers have spotted a parking officer nearby, so if you’re stretching a 2P while you finish up, you get a heads-up instead of a windscreen surprise. It covers the public streets and the council kerb — not the inside of Westfield’s boom gates. For those, watch the clock; for the street, keep Chalked open.
