The short version:
- We don't sell or share your data.
- We only know your location when you tell us — by dropping a pin or checking in.
- You don't need an account to use Chalked.
Who we are
Chalked is run by a small team based in Sydney, Australia. Questions? hello@chalked.cc. "We", "us", and "Chalked" throughout this document refer to the operator of the Chalked app and the website at chalked.cc.
What we collect
Anonymous device ID
When you first open Chalked, your phone generates a random UUID (a "device ID") and stores it locally. We use it to associate your reports and check-ins with a single user record on our server. It isn't tied to your name, email, or phone number.
Location data
Chalked asks for location permission so it can:
- Drop a pin when you spot a ranger. The pin's coordinates are sent to our server.
- Check in when you park. The check-in location is sent to our server so we can alert you when a ranger is reported nearby.
Your location is not sent to our servers at any other time. There is no background tracking.
Username
When you first use Chalked, a random username is generated for you. You can change it at any time. Usernames are visible to other users on your reports. You can set your reports and account to anonymous.
Account details (optional)
If you choose to create an account for cross-device sync, we collect your email and a hashed password. We never see your plain-text password.
Push notification token
If you grant notification permission, your device issues a push token which we store so we can send you ranger-nearby alerts.
Analytics
We use anonymous, privacy-preserving analytics on both the website and the app to understand how Chalked is used and to fix bugs. No cookies, no fingerprinting, no ad tracking.
What we use it for
- Showing ranger reports around you.
- Notifying you when a ranger is reported inside your alert radius.
- Keeping the service reliable — logging errors, measuring load.
We don't use your data for advertising, profiling, or sale to anyone.
Who we share it with
We use third-party service providers for things like database hosting, authentication, push notifications, website hosting, and analytics. They process data on our behalf, subject to their own privacy policies.
We don't share your data with councils, enforcement agencies, or advertisers.
How long we keep it
- Device ID records stay until you uninstall the app.
- Account records stay until you ask us to delete them. Email hello@chalked.cc.
- Push tokens are removed when your device stops acknowledging them.
